Dota 2 Majors 2020 and minors cancelled

17 Mar 2020
After the massive outbreak of Coronavirus, several major Esports game events, including Dota 2 Majors 2020 got canceled due to the safety reasons of fans and players. It is still unclear as to what affects it might have on the Dota Pro Circuit 2019-20.

ESL One Los Angeles Dota 2 Major Delayed

The first shock came in the form of cancelation of the ESL One Los Angeles Dota 2 Major 2020, scheduled for March. It was to be the third Dota 2 Major of the 2019-20 Dota Pro Circuit. There were many issues even before the Valve making an official announcement to postpone the Major.

Sixteen teams were attending the Major from all over the world to fight for 1,000,000 USD, and 15000 DPC points. Before the Major, few players and teams were struggling to acquire the travel visas. There is no official news yet as to when the event will occur in the future.

The OGA Dota PIT Minor 2020 canceled.

Following the ESL One Los Angeles, the next OGA Dota PIT Minor event is also officially canceled by Valve. It is the fourth Minor of the Dota Pro Circuit 2019-20. The qualifiers for the Minor were to start at the beginning of April. The main event was to begin on April 23. It provides the players and fans a dead period until the end of May when the qualifiers for the fifth and final Major of the Dota Pro Circuit will begin.

EPICENTER Major 2020 canceled as well

It is no surprise that after the cancelation of Dota PIT Minor, EPICENTER Major also got canceled. It is the fourth Major of the Dota Pro Circuit 2019-20, set to take place on May 2-19 in Moscow, Russia. So far, Valve has no plans to reschedule the events.

The ONE Esports Singapore Major 2020

With the cancelation of EPICENTER Major and Dota PIT Minor, it is still unclear if the supposedly fifth One Esports Singapore Major will also face the same fate. Singapore Major 2020 will kick off on June 20-28. There is an unnamed Minor as well that will take place sometime in the upcoming months. It is not official yet, but Valve is carefully analyzing the Coronavirus situation to make the final decision in the next few weeks.

Current State of Dota Pro Circuit 2019-20

The most important question is how the Valve will fill the gap on the Dota Pro Circuit, leading to The International. With only two Majors and Minors wrapped up before the Coronavirus outbreak, it leaves us with fifth and final Major of the Dota Pro Circuit.

There are quite some strong teams that are yet to compete in a single DPC LAN event this season. The new lineup of the defending champions OG was to participate in the ESL One Los Angeles, though now it got delayed. Unfortunately, many other teams, including PSG.LGD was expecting to climb up the rankings by playing in the events.

Will International 2020 happen or not?

Considering the overall Dota Pro Circuit 2019-20 situation so far, two Majors and Minors already got canceled. The International 2020 will take place in August in Stockholm, Sweden. It is unpredictable how the canceled Minors and Majors will affect the International, or if the event will take place in the first place or not.

If we assume that the International does happen, the Dota Pro Circuit system will cause several issues for the teams, as it will have DPC Points coming from only three DPC Majors and Minors. The Valve may change the criteria to qualify for the International 2020, but at this point, anything can happen. Only the time can tell what will happen from today onwards.
